Magic moments in the winterwonderland

Winter hikes and snowshoe tours in Zermatt

Clouds Clouds Clouds

While skiers are having fun on the pistes at the Matterhorn Ski Paradise, walkers can discover a winter hiking paradise away from the bustle of the ski slopes. Visitors in search of relaxation can do hiking boots or snowshoes and set out to discover magical winter landscapes. For skiers, too, a gentle winter hike in Zermatt is a welcome change from the action on the slopes.

Winter hiking in Zermatt-Matterhorn

The destination Zermatt-Matterhorn offers more than 70 kilometres of prepared winter hiking and snowshoe trails. Unforgettable tours through unspoilt nature in the romantic snow-covered Valais Alps.

There are 20 kilometres of winter hiking trails above the villages of Täsch and Randa. Findeln has a variety of mountain restaurants to tempt hikers to take a break. And every so often you have to stop and stare: the view of the Matterhorn is simply breath-taking, whichever angle you see it from.

From Zermatt to Furi

There are four different winter hiking trails leading from Zermatt to Furi. The easiest option is the one that starts at Winkelmatten. The three medium-difficult trails go via Zum See, Zmutt or Bietli/Furi. Anyone taking the route to Zmutt should allow two hours instead of the usual one. The 500-year-old hamlet with its original wood cabins is always worth a visit.

From Schwarzsee to Aroleid

Starting from the top station, the winter hiking trail heads below the Matterhorn past the frozen lakes and soon reveals the view of Zermatt and the stunning panorama from Ober Gabelhorn across to Breithorn and the Bernese Alps in the background. The trail proceeds steadily downhill to the Aroleid middle station, where the cable car goes back to Zermatt.

From Sunnegga to Tuftern

The short stretch from the Sunnegga mountain station to Tuftern is a gentle stroll in the sun that takes about half an hour. Suitable for families and children over four. Tip: Children love to be pulled along on sledges.

From Zermatt to Sunnegga

This trail is a more demanding winter hike. Keep Sunnegga in sight as your sunny destination and the almost two-hour hike just flies by. Hikers like to stop off at one of the mountain restaurants in Findeln to recharge their batteries. It isn’t every day you cover an altitude difference of 800 metres in a single day – and that’s in the snow.

Winter wonder Trail

The snowshoe trail starts at the Riffelalp Resort and heads through forested areas and glades to Grünsee lake (crossing the Gornergrat Bahn rails at one point). Animal tracks can be seen along the way and if you keep your eyes peeled, you may see the odd wild animal or two. The trail continues to the snowy glacier foreland at Gant and on to the other side of the valley. Anyone who did the 5 Lakes Walk in the summer will recognise many places. At the end of the trail, you can go back to Zermatt or climb up to the Sunnegga top station and take the underground funicular.
